What is a “teachable moment?”

It happens when a decision needs to be made. Or a question of importance arises.   What is the right choice?  What is the right question?

What do I already know?  What can I assume or extrapolate?  What don’t I know?  What do I really need to know?

In the case of Flo, there is a lot you already know.  She is incredibly ubiquitous, rambunctious, small, and in this case is a character, but one without free will or intent.  She does what comes naturally, which is dissolving things, moving things around, and escaping.

One of the teachable moments arising after watching “Gasland” includes, “how does drinking water become contaminated after fracking, or unconventional drilling of natural gas wells?”

Flo is used extensively in natural gas drilling.  She is mixed with sand, chemicals and additives, pumped down a concrete well deep into the earth, where she escapes, and takes things with her.  This is her nature.

There are so many things to say and show about Flo.  And the deep Earth.  Other short Flo films will  look at polarity – Flo’s electromagnetic properties.  Her phase changes between solid, liquid and gas.  Her ability to store and release heat.  Her journeys within the hydrologic cycle.  Her weathering effects.  Etc etc  Separate moments, each depicting one or 2 phenomena.   For the appropriate teachable moment.
